BMW automobiles, parts and accessories: What would later become the Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) began as two separate companies. Flugzenmaschinenfabrik, an Airplane Factory, in Munich merged with Flugwerke Deutschland on March 7, 1916 to become the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, "the Bavarian Airplane Works". Specializing in the design and manufacture of airplane engines, the company would manufacture sturdy machines for Germany's new air force, including for Baron von Richthofen.

On July 21, 1917, under the direction of Karl Rapp and Max Friz, history was made when the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke was renamed the Bayerische Motoren Werke (The "Bavarian Motor Works"). BMW's logo, showing an airplane propeller in the blue sky, would remain throughout the company's history. During the next few years, the company's primary output was the V-12 airplane engine.

With the end of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was now forbidden to manufacture airplanes. The company executives looked to motorcycle and automobile engines to sustain the company's economic health. During the 1920s, with Germany only recently a powerful industrial leader, high inflationary rates and a lack of money for luxuries, pressured the German manufacturers to come up with lower-priced products. Motorcycles were seen as an important means of transportation (especially with few cars available) and 80% of BMW's products went to business clientele. During the 1930s, while America's economic collapse began to influence the German economy, BMW continued its forward move. The release of the next generation of engine designs, plus a foray into smaller, fuel-efficient models, sustained BMW through lean years. By the decade's end, with the rumblings of WWII growing louder, BMW had kicked into high gear, manufacturing heavily for the German war effort. After World War II, initial stringent post war restrictions on Germany were relaxed, and BMW was free to continue production across all its divisions. The production of handmade sports cars resumed.





The decade of the 1960s was a decade of slow-growth for BMW Motorcycles, which allowed the company to aggressively build up its automobile lines. The appearance of a generation of "Yuppies", known for their financial success and extravagant desires, fueled a mini-boom for BMW. The company's sport cars became the luxury transportation of choice for a generation that exhilarated in financial freedom.
