Bordens collectibles: Since 1939, Elsie the Cow, one of the top ten icons of the twentieth century, has been a spokescow for Bordens dairy products, and a symbol of excellence in the dairy industry. She represents flavor, trust, and traditional values.

In 1939, Bordens Dairy entered an exhibition at the World's Fair featuring 150 cows. The first Elsie was actually named Lobelia. She starred as "Buttercup" in the film "Little Men", but two years later died in an automobile accident. She was the first of more than two dozen living spokescows throughout Bordens history. She even appeared in fund drives during World War II to help to raise war bonds. She continues to travel throughout the country, meeting more than ten million people per year.

It all began in 1856, when Gail Borden received the first patent on condensed milk in both the United States and England. This was 41 years before Campbell's Soup introduced their condensed soup process. The following year, the first successful condensery was built in Connecticut by Gail Borden. Thereafter every conceivable milk product of the highest quality and taste has been added to the list of Borden's presentations from ice cream to cottage cheese.

Bordens collectibles, in particular, Elsie collectibles have appeared on posters, booklets, mugs, creamers, and dolls. The matriarchal bovine has appeared in all manner of advertising from magazines, to television, to grocery store displays. Her husband is Elmer, best known for his glue. Her twins started out as Beulah and Beauregard, but were later renamed Bea and Beaumister. She was briefly retired in the 1960s, but because of public demand, was reactivated to a prominent position in the company where she remains today. The Elsie book, "My Story", produced in 1942, commands a price of $25. Items such as a 9 1/2 inch Elsie bust from the 1940s can command upwards of $200. There are butter molds, clocks, coasters, coloring books, gameboards, milk bottles and numerous other collectibles. 15hqqr.
