Chobits - the allure of Chi

  chobits

Japanese anime cartooning reached new heights with Chobits, the well-received cartoon of science fiction, romance, and parody. The manga original began its weekly run in Japan's "Young" magazine in February of 2001, a product from the famous CLAMP team, a four-woman manga studio that has created some of the world's most popular manga. Among their creations are the girls comic hit Cardcaptor Sakura and Tokyo Babylon. Closely associated with anime studio Madhouse, they have seen their original manga adapted into a successful anime. Their group consists of team leader, Ageha Ohkawa, responsible for storyline, Satsuki Igarashi, design leader, Tsubaki Nekoi, art assistant, and Mokona, lead artist from Kyoto. The art of Chobits is cleaner and simpler than the complex and often baroque efforts like Tokyo Babylon.

The story shifts into the territory of boys' interests, starting with the male character, 19 year-old Hideki, who lives in the future world of the 22nd century. He wants what his peers want, a good job, a good car, and a sexy robot girlfriend companion known as a "Persocom" companion. Unable to afford the product of the future, he accidentally discovers a discarded machine, a dysfunctional Persocom who has been dumped into the trash. Her name is Chi and she is no ordinary anime babe. He rescues her from her uncertain fate, and she turns out to be the main character of the series, leading her savior through a series of uncomfortable romantic-comedy adventures. The series is a tongue-in-cheek critique of society, as well as a genuinely absorbing fantasy, packaged in the usual manga romantic innuendos. Chi, the lovable heroine, is a combination of Star Trek's Data, who is perpetually consumed with becoming human, and Walt Disney's "tinkerbelle", an magical creation with an attitude. This delightful Japanese anime series has recently been introduced to English-speaking audiences, after its successful run in its homeland.

After the hero, Hideki, brings home his castoff girl robot, his friends help him to get it up and running. He watches as she begins to learn, following what those around her do by imitation, the same as a child learns. Slowly, Hideki suspects that his robot is more sophisticated than she behaves, and he begins to suspect that she might be a more advanced Artificial Intelligence machine, a "Chobit" that is merely rumored to exist. This is no mere mechanical girl with artificial hair. A second character emerges when Chi closes her eyes. A second personality appears, the Dark Chi, who knows more about the waking Chi's life than she herself. Throughout the series, we encounter and array of complex characters, including Takako Shimizu, teacher at Hideki's "cram school," who is searching for her own companionship, having lost her husband's love when he became obsessed with his "Persocom." There is Hideki's schoolmate, Shimbo who has a laptop Persocom, called Plum, a personal planner, alarm clock, fitness instructor, and entertainer, who is frightened by Hideki's frequent overreactions. Others include Hideki's landlady, a rich kid, Yumi, a cute waitress who has a crush on Hideki, and the troublemakers, Zima and Dita whose motives are not always clear.

There is the customary stable of accessories and interest derived from the series, including chobits mp3, chobits download episode 1 english, and the chobits gallery of chobits characters. Naturally Chi from Chobits is the most popular character, and many items can be found throughout the Internet, including Chobits wallpaper. Other items such as Chobits posters are available from online auctions.
