Gundam Seed Mobile Suit was derived from a 1979 space opera that
appeared on Japanese television in 1979. In the series people use giant
robots to fight wars in space (General Unilateral Neuro-Link Dispersive
Autonomic Maneuver). But the people are no mere cardboard
characters, but complex individuals challenging one another in a
Universe that is not characterized by clear-cut good and evil. In fact,
it is difficult to distinguish the heroes from the villains and they are
virtually interchangeable.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam was continued as a series of sequels,
followed by original videos and feature films. After more than twenty
years, the original story has expanded into comics, novels, and video
game adventures. All series are centered around the fighting, flying
machines known as Gundams. We see similar elements appearing in Star
Wars and Alien, as machines of gigantic size and power which are
controlled by single pilots sitting in cockpits.
It wasn't until 1998, that the saga came to North America, with new
sequels being released from time to time. Considerable amounts of
associated merchandise has been released for both the new fans, just
discovering the saga, and older fans who have followed it from the
beginning.
