The Lamborghini company was founded in 1963, in Bolognese, Italy by Ferrucio Lamborghini, born, April 28, 1916. The young Ferrucio was a mechanical prodigy who was drafted into the service of Italy during World War Two. There he repaired vehicles, but after the war, he built tractors from spare parts and in 1963 founded his own company. The car symbol came from his Horoscope, Taurus the bull, and many of his cars were named for the sign.

The first car appeared the following year, the 350 GT, soon to be followed by the 400 GT. The 400 GT 2+2 was Lamborghini's ticket to worldwide recognition, followed by the legendary Miura. After the first oil crisis, the company got into financial trouble, and by 1973, Lamborghini had sold all of his interests in his companies and retired to a vineyard in Umbria province of Italy, where he produced a red wine based on his famous Miura. He died in 1993 at 77 years of age.

Although the company went bankrupt in 1980, it was sold to the Mimran brothers, French tycoons in the food industry. In 1987, U.S. car giant Chrysler bought all of the companies shares. Other famous models included the Islero, Espada, Jarama, and the most successful model to that time, the Countach. The latter was replaced in 1990 by the Diablo. The company changed hands again in 1994, and later in 1995. Then in 1998, AUDI AG executed an agreement to take over Lamborghini's entire share capital.
